Today one of the most dynamic market place is the smart phone industry. Earlier the market was dominated by Nokia, LG and Sony, to be followed by Samsung and Apple. Today we find the picture has changed, Apple and Samsung hold the leading position. With other companies giving them tough competition.As per a research by Gartner, the leading 5 smart phone companies are Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi. The ranking is based on the global sales of smart phones in the first quarter of 2016.
Samsung, the South Korean smart phone giant rules the market wher smart phone is concerned with 81,186,900 units being sold in the first quarter. The company held 23.2% market share, which is marginally down from 24.1% in comparison with the first quarter sales last year. Anshul Gupta, Gartner’s research director said that theSamsung’s Galaxy S7 series phones and renewed portfolio positioned it as a strong competitor in the smartphone market, and more so in the emerging markets where it has been facing fierce competition from local manufacturers.
In the global smart phone market we find that Apple has managed to hold its second position. It seems it is a matter of time that it will be able to hold on to its position. With iPhone sales down by 14 percent, Apple is witnessing double digit decline in its sales. The third position is held by the Chinese smart phone maker Huawei. The rise of sale of Huawei smart phones could be seen not only in China but also in Europe, America and Africa. According to Gartner, the company’s total sale in the first quarter of 2016 was 28,861,000 units and its market share was 8.3 percent.
The fourth position is held by Oppo. In the first quarter of 2016 Oppo’s performance was the best with a rise in its unit sales by 145 percent. Oppo experienced maximum growth in China. In the fifth position we find the market is captued by the Chinese smart phone maker Xiaomi. Xiaomi witnessed strong growth in China similar to Huawei and Oppo.
